Implants and the Posterior Maxilla – Advanced Surgical Techniques for Establishing Bone Support
The dentoalveolar bone in the posterior maxilla is subject to the same post-extraction crestal bone loss as occurs at other sites in the oral cavity. The presence of the maxillary sinus, which can increase in size over time, can contribute to loss of bone from the apical aspect.
This phenomenon, if sufficiently advanced, will compromise the dimension of vertical bone available for implant placement in the posterior maxilla, hence necessitating advanced surgical techniques to ensure successful implant rehabilitation. This comprehensive workshop is designed for dental professionals seeking to enhance their surgical proficiency in sinus lift procedures and guided bone regeneration. Through a combination of evidence-based lectures, pre-clinical demonstrations, and hands-on exercises on models, participants will gain a thorough understanding of maxillary sinus anatomy, surgical planning, instrumentation, and grafting materials. Emphasis will be placed on both lateral window and trans-crestal approaches, complication management, and the biological principles underlying bone healing and regeneration.

Dr Andrew Hua-an Cheng, BDS, MBBS, FRACDS (OMS)
Dr Andrew Cheng is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon based in Adelaide, Australia. He practises at Advanced Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Advanced OMS), where his clinical work focuses on dentoalveolar surgery, implant reconstruction, and bone grafting procedures, including maxillary sinus augmentation. Dr Cheng is actively involved in postgraduate education and surgical mentoring and regularly delivers continuing professional development courses. His teaching emphasises sound anatomical understanding, biological principles, and practical, evidence-based decision-making relevant to everyday clinical practice.
